Williams has published academic research about US women writers, including a monograph, Not in Sisterhood (Palgrave 2001); she is co-editor with Cyrus RK Patell, of Oxford History of the Novel in English Volume Eight: US Fiction from 1940. Williams writes a regular column for The National (UAE), and her non-academic writing has appeared in The Rumpus, Ravishly, Inside Higher Ed, The Paris Review, and The New York Times.
