Kohtaro Kosugiyama (GLS '20), a senior majoring in Global Liberal Studies and minoring in Peace and Conflict Studies (PACS), was invited to the United Nations Headquarters on September 9th, by the President of the United Nations' 73rd General Assembly H.E. Ms. María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés to discuss the UN's action and its effectiveness towards the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Kohtaro spoke with the President and the UN member states' ambassadors under the theme of "Millennials and the UN."
“My learnings at GLS and PACS, and internship at the Permanent Mission of Japan to the UN, helped me share critical feedback and suggestions to these high-level officials,” Kohtaro noted. As a Davis UWC (United World Colleges) scholar, he brought diverse voices from the UWC community, an international educational movement joined by 18 international boarding schools worldwide with 55,000 students from more than 180 countries. He also shared insights from youth leaders he met during Global Leaders Forum for Youth (GLF4Y), a platform Kohtaro initiated and organized for youth leaders to meet each other, learn from today’s leaders, and actively design what they can do to lead their communities.
Kohtaro is a firm believer in inclusion as the world's strength in combating challenges faced in today's globalizing world, and he is proud to call GLS his home.
