Liberal Studies congratulates Joanna Chin, LS Academic Advisor, and Axel Keating, LS Student Affairs Administrator, for leading packed house sessions during the sold-out 2019 Student Affairs Conference at NYU!
Chin lead a morning session titled: 90 Majors, $0, and 224 Undecided Students: Rethinking Access to Academic Program Data to Address Student Planning Anxiety. Anxiety is a pressing reality as students navigate an overwhelming number of academic program options. Leaders in the field seek to facilitate easier student access to institutional program data to address this anxiety. Chin’s session explored how student affairs professionals can use simple tech resources to support and guide student academic exploration by tracing the development of the LS Major Molecule, a no-budget tool created within the time constraints of an academic advisor’s life.
Keating lead a workshop titled #4intersex: Supporting Intersex Students in Higher Education. While an estimated 1.7% of the population is intersex—making being intersex about as common as being born a twin—there is a lack of resources on many campuses for intersex students. This session provided an overview of intersex variations, the intersex rights movement, and resources and tools to support intersex students in higher education within health and wellness services, athletics, intramurals, and recreation, residential life and housing services, LGBTQ+ centers, and school departments, particularly pre-medical/medical and gender and sexuality studies programs.
