Workshop in Sustainable Futurism: Do you think you can prevent a pandemic?

The interconnected climate, biodiversity, and human wellbeing crises are at the heart of how pandemics emerge. This interactive sustainable futurism workshop will split the audience into groups and will prompt each group with a scenario that could reflect the very early signs of an emerging infectious disease, followed by a student presentation on the current H5N1 Bird Flu situation.

Workshopping case studies in environmental and social justice: Applications for a sustainable future
Professor Genia Naro-Maciel and the NYU Alliance For Environmental and Social Justice
Students, faculty, staff, and other community members are invited to analyze environmental justice case studies and enjoy dinner and prizes at the NYU 2040 Now workshop. Small groups will analyze case studies and their ramifications for the broader conversation surrounding race, inclusivity, and justice, including best practices and recommendations.

Exploring Microbial Futures—Microbes Amidst Global Change

How will bacteria, fungi and other microbes shape and be shaped by the future in 2040 and beyond? What do microbes and fungi have to do with climate change & sustainability? This two-hour long event will consist of a short panel discussion featuring Patricia Kaishian (Visiting Assistant Professor of Biology at Bard College), Sarah Hearn (Artist and Researcher) and Elizabeth Henaff (Assistant Professor of Integrated Media at NYU Tandon), followed by the opportunity to engage with and visualize microbes through microscopy, create your own mushroom growing kit, and more.
