Professor Eugene Ostashevsky has been awarded the International Poetry Prize of the city of Muenster for his 2017 poem-novel The Pirate Who Does Not Know the Value of Pi. The biennial prize is given for a book for poetry in German translation, with previous winners including Derek Walcott, Zbigniew Herbert, and Andrea Zanzotto. The Pirate, translated by Monika Rinck and Uljana Wolf, was praised by the jury for its “polyphonic and polyglot linguistic acrobatics and the wealth of forms of an author, who virtuously draws all genre registers—from children’s and pirate’s song to tractate and ballad to hip-hop and rap.”
