Joyce Apsel, Clinical Professor in LS, organized a La Pietra Dialogue at NYU Florence titled Museums, Memory and Politics: Educating about "Difficult Knowledge". How do museums serve as sites of memory? What is at stake in the politics of representation and education? Joyce Apsel introduced the subject and gave a presentation, titled "Until Justice Rolls Down Like Water: History, Struggle and Memory," discussing the Civil and Human Rights Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Other participants included Davide Lombardo, of NYU Florence, on the Museum of Deportation outside Florence; Amy Sodaro on the 9/11 Memorial Museum in New York City; and Roy Tamashiro on the My Lai Massacre Memorial in Vietnam.
Over 100 students, as well as faculty, attended the panel and participated in the meaningful question and answer that followed.
