Clinical Associate Professor and founder of Liberal Studies' new undergraduate minor in Translation, Jen Zoble, recently published the English translation of Sladostrašće by Asja Bakić. This Bosnian-language collection of short stories–titled Sweetlust in English–describes a dystopian world of only women contending with climate change, gender fluidity, and time travel.
As translator Ellen Elias-Bursać describes, “Sweetlust rollicks and seethes with a rakish energy, part hilarious, part bone-chilling. Translated brilliantly by Jennifer Zoble, these stories zip back and forth across the centuries. Never a dull moment!” Author of Don't Come Back Lina Ferreira Cabeza-Vanegas agrees saying, "evocative of the work of Joyce Carol Oates and Leonora Carrington, Asja Bakić—aided by a brilliant translator—delivers a perfectly discordant punch to the gut of matters few dare touch."
This is Bakić's second novel after her earlier Mars: Stories, which was also translated by Zoble in 2019. In addition to Bakić's work, Zoble has also translated the Croatian Zovite me Esteban by Lejla Kalamujić and has been published in several journals
