Liberal Studies combines the advantages of a liberal arts college with all the resources of a large research university. Small, discussion-based classes and a distinguished faculty dedicated to teaching provide a dynamic, creative, and interdisciplinary environment for learning. Participation in NYU’s Global Network and opportunities for research, civic engagement, and campus leadership, as well as an array of LS and University-wide clubs and programs provide you with rich co-curricular experiences on and off campus, in New York City and across the globe.
Academics
Academic Programs
Liberal Studies is home to two innovative programs of study:
The Core Curriculum
Begin your studies with an intersectional, interdisciplinary approach to the liberal arts through our core curriculum. This innovative foundation for nearly 100 majors at NYU emphasizes conceptual and spatial frameworks to trace the movement of ideas and the interconnectivity of material culture from early antiquity through contemporary times. Students develop their critical thinking and analytical abilities, expand their intellectual curiosity, explore diverse social and political perspectives, and hone their writing and communication skills. Advisors and professors work closely with students to identify the best academic plan for achieving their goals. As juniors, LS Core students transition to their chosen majors throughout NYU to complete their bachelor’s degree.
Global Study
Liberal Studies offers students unparalleled access to NYU’s global network through the First Year Away (FYA) program at NYU in Florence, London, Madrid, or Washington, DC, or a semester abroad at one of the many global sites. In the Global Liberal Studies B.A., students spend their junior year studying at one of nine global sites, undertaking independent research and internships aligned with their academic interests. All coursework at NYU’s global sites builds toward students’ majors and minors and graduation requirements.
